A Southern Fall Welcome—For Someone We May Never Meet

A Southern Fall Welcome—For Someone We May Never Meet

As evening settles over Henington House, the porch takes on a lovely glow. Pumpkins rest among the greenery, ferns spill from their pots, and little lights twinkle around the windows. The chairs seem to say, “Come sit a while.”

This is fall in the South—where the pumpkins arrive while the ferns are still flourishing, and a warm evening can invite us to linger on the porch.

I love how it feels here. But as you watch this little glimpse of our home, I hope you’ll think with me about the people who see it from the street.

Hospitality can reach someone who may never set foot inside.

Someone driving by might glance over and enjoy the lights, the pumpkins, and the welcome of a well-loved home. We may never see their face, much less know their story.

Are they lonely?

Are they hurting?

Are they on their way home after a day that required more strength than they thought they had?

Or are they having a wonderful day, and this little Southern fall porch simply made it a bit better?

We will most likely never know.

And quite frankly… we don’t need to.

We don’t need to know someone’s circumstances to offer them a moment of peace. We don’t need to meet them to contribute a little warmth to their day. And we don’t need to hear that it mattered for it to be worth doing.

Perhaps these lights remind someone of a home they once loved. Perhaps the pumpkins bring back memories of fall evenings with their children. Perhaps a passenger simply says, “Oh, look at that porch!” and two people share a smile as they continue down the street.

What a comforting thought—that something we enjoy creating at home might become a lovely moment in someone else’s life.

Here at Henington House, the porch more often than not needs paint or repair but it is a part of our everyday living. We tend the plants, enjoy the chairs, and welcome the changing seasons. It gives us pleasure, but we realize that its reach is far beyond us.

The welcome begins before anyone reaches the steps.

That is something we can all offer, in whatever space we have. A swept walk. A favorite plant beside the door. A pumpkin tucked among the pots. A porch light glowing as the day grows dark.

There is no need to make it complicated. Start with what you have and what you love. A little care can make a place feel warm and inviting.

My faith reminds me that God knows every person passing our home. He knows who is grieving, who is worried, who is celebrating, and who feels forgotten. I cannot know what a glimpse of our porch might mean to any of them. But I love the possibility that He could use something as simple as a light, a growing plant, or a touch of seasonal beauty to brighten their way.

So I’ll place the pumpkins. Tend the greenery. Turn on the lights.

I’ll enjoy this Southern fall porch with gratitude—and gladly share the view.

There may never be a conversation. We may never discover whose evening was made a little sweeter.

We can extend the welcome anyway.

With love from our porch to yours,

Catherine Strange
